To minimize stress and anxiety when it comes to registering your child for Primary One, always plan ahead.

Know the process.

Maybe you feel so long as your child goes to school, it’s enough. Even then, logistically, you would want your child to attend a school that’s conveniently located. Or you might be thinking: hey, we live within 2km of three great schools – we shouldn’t have to worry. Well, we’re here to caution you about that. See, great schools only ballot for those within 1km radius. Uh-oh.
Whatever it is - know the process. Let us walk you through:

Use the correct tools.

The Ministry of Education uses Onemap to reflect the boundaries of the school’s radii. No other tool will be as accurate in letting you know where you stand when it comes to the distance criteria.

Balloting for the top schools usually looks like this:
Phase 1 : Guaranteed a spot
Phase 2A (1): Ballot within 1km
Phase 2A (2): Ballot within 1km
Phase 2B : Ballot within 1km
Phase 2C : Ballot within 1km

For Phase 2B in these schools, parent volunteers must usually already be living within 1 km of the school in order for your application to be considered.

Check balloting history.

Most of the schools will have their balloting history reflected on their official MOE websites. In the event, these are too well-hidden, you can always sign up for KiasuParents and check for the histories here.
This will give you insight into how popular the schools are around your location which would aid in your decision making.

Evaluate the available options.

What are the schools within proximity?
Do they require balloting?
When is it time to volunteer?
Do you still have time to relocate?
These are all important questions.

Be prepared and decisive.

If the school you want requires balloting, plan ahead and be decisive -

Enroll on the last day of the relevant registration phase, not the first day.

Check registration status on the last day of registration, 2 hours before closing time.

Decide if you want to join the ballot. Or do you want to withdraw from your first choice and switch to another school?
